History

Ormskirk takes its name from an old Norse word ‘Ormres Kirkja’, which includes the Norse name ‘Ormr’ and the word for ‘church’. Ormr’s identity is unclear, but it’s thought he may have been a Viking who settled in the area. Set 13 miles from Liverpool city centre, the town is most famous for its gingerbread, which was baked and sold by Sally Woods, a widow who had 13 children – this was how she provided for her family.
