History

At one time Burnley was producing the longest length of cotton cloth than anywhere else in the world. In 1296 a fulling mill was erected on the bank of the River Brun which helped with the production of cotton. Burnley’s population steadily grew along with its industry and by 1900 Burnley had 79,000 looms. Burnley also boasts corn mills, iron and brass foundries and other industries. In this day and age there are only a few textile producers in Burnley and old factories have been replaced with housing developments and modern retailers.
