History

Many well known celebrities have come from Oldham, including Philip Schofield and Paul Scholes. Originally known for being the greatest cotton spinning town of the textile industry, Oldham had flourished after the Industrial Revolution due to its high humidity and large reserves of coal. Many mills and cotton factories were erected along with canals, railways and roads which made Oldham central to the cotton industry. In 1887, Oldham was responsible for 13% of the world’s production of cotton, all on its own. Oldham was left with beautiful Victoria architecture after the decline of cotton production during the 20th century which is still visible today.
